Cross-Shaped Bronze Fitting from Illerup – Archaeological Artifact Print

This print features a bronze fitting in the shape of a cross, measuring 30 mm, discovered at the Illerup Ådal site in Denmark. Dating to the Late Roman Iron Age (circa 3rd–4th century AD), this object formed part of the extensive collection of military equipment and personal items deposited in the bog as votive offerings.

The cross shape, while later strongly associated with Christianity, had broader symbolic meanings in earlier periods, often representing cardinal directions, balance, or protection. This fitting, with its loops and attachment points, was likely mounted on military gear such as a harness, shield, or chariot, combining functional and decorative purposes.

Illerup Ådal is renowned for its large-scale deposits of weapons and equipment, interpreted as ritual sacrifices following conflict. Objects like this fitting highlight the complex interplay between warfare, status, and ritual in Iron Age Northern Europe.

Printed on high-quality archival paper, this reproduction faithfully presents the texture and patina of the original artifact. Suitable for educational environments, offices, or private collections, the print offers a visual connection to the material culture and beliefs of Iron Age Scandinavia.
